What a British winter actually does to a garden sauna
Everything looks convincing in a photograph taken in September. This is about the third week of January, and what separates equipment that survives a British winter from equipment that merely photographs well.
The first winter is the one that tells you what you bought. Everything looks convincing in a photograph taken in September. What matters is what the thing is doing in the third week of January, after eleven weeks of rain, when the ground has gone soft and nobody has opened the door in nine days.
A lot of outdoor wellness equipment sold in Britain was designed for a Nordic climate. Those are not the same problem. Scandinavia is cold and dry. Britain is mild and permanently damp, which is harder on timber, harder on fixings, and much harder on anything with an electrical component sitting near the ground.
Damp is the enemy, not cold
Cold is easy. Timber does not mind cold. What timber minds is going repeatedly from wet to dry to wet again, because every one of those cycles moves it. Over a single winter a poorly specified panel can cup, cracks can open along the grain, and a door that closed sweetly in October starts binding by February.
This is why the species and the treatment matter far more than the marketing does. Thermally modified timber, western red cedar and properly treated spruce all behave differently, and they age differently too. A good manufacturer will tell you exactly what the exterior will look like in five years and what maintenance it needs to get there. A less good one will show you the September photograph again.
A cabin that has silvered evenly is doing its job. A cabin that has silvered in patches usually has a water problem.
Silvering itself is not damage. Untreated cedar and thermowood both go a soft grey as the surface weathers, and plenty of owners prefer it. What you are looking for is whether it is happening evenly. Patchy greying, dark streaks below a joint, or a corner that stays visibly wetter than the rest of the elevation all point at water sitting somewhere it should not.
The base is the part nobody photographs
More British installations are ruined from underneath than from above. If a cabin sits directly on wet ground, or on a slab that holds water against the bearers, the floor structure will go long before the roof does. It is the least glamorous line in any specification and it is the one that decides whether you still own this in ten years.
- A level, free draining base, with air able to move underneath rather than sitting still.
- Bearers that are never in direct contact with standing water at any point of the year, including February.
- Somewhere for roof runoff to actually go, which in most British gardens means deciding before delivery rather than after.
None of this is expensive to get right at the planning stage. All of it is expensive to fix afterwards, because fixing it means lifting the cabin.
What a chiller does in a cold month
There is a common assumption that a cold plunge chiller gets an easy winter because the air is already cold. In practice a unit that is undersized for its volume struggles in every season, and in winter the difficulty shows up somewhere else: the chiller holds temperature comfortably, but the pump, the pipework and the filtration are running in conditions the manufacturer may never have tested for.
The questions worth asking are dull and specific, which is usually a sign they are the right ones.

The honest answer about running costs
A well insulated plunge holding four degrees costs less to run in January than it does in July, because the ambient air is helping rather than fighting. A poorly insulated one costs more all year, and the gap widens in summer. Insulation, not chiller size, is the number that quietly decides your electricity bill.
What we do about all of this
Every product listed here goes through three gates before it appears, and the winter question is asked at every one of them. We ask manufacturers what happens to the exterior over five years, what the base requirement really is, and what the unit does at minus four with nobody watching. Where an answer is vague, the product does not get listed.
That is why the range is short. It will grow as partnerships complete, and it will grow slowly, because the alternative is selling somebody a serious piece of equipment that looks wrong by its second spring.
