Installation, if you would rather not build it yourself

Every sauna arrives as a kit you can build yourself. If you would rather not, tick the box and we introduce you to an independent installer near you. Expect it to cost from about £650.

What ticking the box does

  • Nothing is charged at the checkout. The tick adds a note to your order.
  • We find an independent installer who covers your postcode, someone we have used before where we can, and put you in touch.
  • You agree the price and the date with the installer and pay them directly. Their contract is with you, not with Tarnfell.
  • If the price does not suit, say no. Your order stands and you build the cabin yourself.

What the installer does

  • Builds the cabin where it is going to stand, working from the maker's instructions.

What stays with you

  • Anything this page lists under what arrives and what does not. For an outdoor cabin that is usually the base.
  • Electrical work. The installer does not do it. Where the product needs its own circuit, a qualified electrician runs, connects and certifies it, because outdoor circuits and rooms containing a sauna heater are notifiable work in England.

Why £650 is a guide, not a price

  • It is where installation typically starts. The installer's figure for your order depends on the size of the cabin, how far the parts have to be carried from the kerb, and how far they travel to you.

Why a sauna takes weeks

How this one arrives

The sauna arrives as a kit on a pallet, delivered by lorry to the kerbside or the nearest firm, level spot the driver can reach. From there the parts move by hand: the staves, the two end walls with the door fitted, the benches and the boxed heater. Two people carry everything. The maker's own figure for the whole kit is about 415kg, which we have not yet weighed ourselves.

If you would rather not build it yourself, we can introduce you to an independent installer near you, typically from £650, paid to them directly. Once you place your order we confirm your delivery date, and if you want an installer we introduce you to an independent one near you.

Warranty

Two years on the barrel against manufacturing defects, and two years on the Harvia The Wall heater and its built in controls, under Harvia's published warranty terms. Registering the heater with Harvia adds a third year on it.

The UK distributor administers the warranty and raises claims with the maker where needed. Claims come to us. One email, and we deal with the distributor and the maker on your behalf rather than handing you a phone number. The cabin is sold for home use: commercial or very frequent use can affect cover.

What no sauna warranty covers, here or anywhere: timber moving, splitting slightly or greying outdoors, which is cedar behaving normally rather than failing; sauna stones, which are consumable; and damage from installation on a base that is not flat or not load bearing.

Returns

Until the order is placed with the supplier you can cancel and be refunded in full, with no reason needed.

After that the sauna is on its way, and our returns policy sets out exactly where that leaves you. Check the pallet on the day it arrives, count the parts against the list in the manual, and tell us about anything damaged or missing within 48 hours; anything that arrives damaged or faulty is ours to put right either way.

About this product

The Princeton is an Almost Heaven outdoor barrel sauna for four to six people, built from western red cedar staves, 1.83m across and 2.39m front to back, and 1.956m tall. Inside are two facing benches with 2.21m of room between the end walls, enough to lie down.

A Harvia The Wall 8kW heater with its controls built in is included, with the sauna stones and an interior LED light. It runs on a 50A single phase circuit, against 40A for the smaller Pinnacle, wired and certified by an electrician.

The sauna arrives as a kit on one pallet, with kerbside delivery to mainland Britain included in the price. The maker gives about 415kg for the whole kit, and two people can carry every part by hand from the kerb.

Is this the right one for you

Who this is actually for.

Every product here is described with the honest opposite beside it: who it suits, and who should be looking at something else.

You want a barrel somebody can actually lie down in

The room is 2.21 metres between the end walls, so each bench takes an adult full length and six can sit. It is the longest room of the four barrels in this range, and the extra length costs 560mm of garden over the 6ft one.

Worth confirmingtwo of you will ever use it. Six seats take longer to heat and cost more to run than four, and the Pinnacle does the same job in a smaller footprint for £1,200 less.

You are happy to build it, or to pay somebody to build it

This arrives as a kit. The maker's own guidance is two or three people and a few hours, working from the printed manual, on a base you have already laid. Nothing about it needs a specialist trade until the electrician arrives.

Worth confirmingyou want a cabin delivered finished and switched on. Nothing in a barrel comes pre-assembled, and a wet Saturday with a mallet is part of the purchase whether you swing it or pay somebody to.

The product that gets used is the one worth recommending, and it is not always the largest one.

Will it work where you are

The measurements that decide it.

Read this before anything else. Things this size are almost never sent back because they were the wrong product; they are sent back because they were the wrong size for the space.

The base is the one to respect. Almost Heaven's own instructions ask for a foundation that is flat and able to carry more than 1,000 pounds, which is about 454kg, before anything is stood on it. This is the longer barrel, so the slab is longer too.

What actually happens

From order to first use.

Here is each stage, and who does what. Before you order, email hello@tarnfell.com and we will confirm the current lead time, delivery to your postcode, installation options or anything else you would rather have settled first.

  1. Week 0

    Order and site check

Base, access and your electrical supply are agreed before the order is placed. You arrange the base and the circuit; we confirm your delivery date and the lead time in writing.

  2. Before it arrives

    The base and the circuit

A flat, load bearing slab or two strip footings, laid and cured. An electrician runs a 50A single phase circuit to the position and leaves it ready to terminate. The 8kW heater takes a 50A circuit, against 40A for the 6kW, so the electrical work does not grow with the sauna.

  3. Delivery day

    Kerbside, on a pallet

A lorry brings one pallet to the kerbside or the nearest firm, level spot it can reach. Check the pallet against the parts list in the manual on the day and tell us about anything damaged or missing within 48 hours.

  4. Build day

Two or three people, a few hours

Cradles down and levelled, staves laid up, end walls fitted, bands tensioned, benches in, heater hung. The maker's own guidance is two or three people and a handful of hours. We can introduce you to an independent installer instead.

  5. Before first use

    The electrician returns

The heater is terminated and the circuit tested and certified. Outdoor circuits and rooms containing a sauna heater are notifiable work in England and Wales, so you should be handed a certificate.

Living with it

What owning one actually involves.

The handful of things that decide whether this is still in use in year three.

The baseYours to provide

A flat, load bearing slab about 1.9 by 2.4 metres, or two strip footings, laid before the pallet arrives. Almost Heaven ask for a foundation rated above 1,000 pounds, roughly 454kg, and a barrel that is not level will not band up straight.

The timberWestern red cedar, left to grey

Cedar is naturally durable and is normally left unfinished outdoors, where it weathers to silver grey over a season or two. That is the timber behaving, not failing, and it needs no treatment.

Where it standsOut from under trees

A barrel sheds water on its own curve, which works as long as nothing sits on top of it. Under trees, leaf litter and standing damp collect along the crown and stay there. Six feet of clear sky above it is worth more than any treatment.

Heating itAbout an hour, on a timer

The maker's figure is 180°F, about 82°C, in an hour from cold with the 8kW heater, and the heater's built in controls will delay the start by up to eight hours so it is hot when you get in.

What it costs to live with

The running costs, with the working shown.

The purchase price is public; the running cost rarely is. Ours are published with the assumptions stated, so you can check the arithmetic and change it for your own tariff.

An evening session, 8kW electric

about £3.16

Heat up: 8kW for 1 hour is 8 kWh. Holding: 1.5 hours at roughly 40% duty is 4.8 kWh. Total 12 kWh at 26.32p is £3.16. Winter costs more, a warm evening less.

Twice a week for a year

about £328

104 sessions at £3.16. A bigger room costs more to heat whether one person or six is in it, which is the honest argument for buying the smaller barrel if it is usually just the two of you.

The parts that wear

stones and a jacket

Sauna stones are consumable and are restacked yearly and replaced when they crumble, normally every few years. Beyond that a barrel has no filter, no pump and no chemistry, so there is nothing else on a schedule.

Assumptions: electricity at the Ofgem price cap unit rate of 26.32p per kWh, 1 October to 31 December 2026, with no VAT on household electricity in that period. Heat up and holding figures are calculated from the heater's rated 8kW output, not measured on an installed sauna. A barrel is single skin, so it draws more when it is cold outside.

Owning it properly

What you have to do, and what the rules require.

Everything you have to do, and how often.

Job How often Who
Install and certify the heater circuit The Wall 8kW is 230V single phase at 50A on 3 x 6mm2 cable, or 400V three phase at 3 x 16A on 5 x 2.5mm2. The 6kW barrels need 40A, so this one asks more of your supply. Outdoor circuits and rooms containing a sauna heater are notifiable electrical work in England and Wales. Once, before first use A qualified electrician
Check the bands Timber moves as it settles and as the seasons turn. The steel bands are re-tensioned after the first few weeks and then checked with the clocks, which is what keeps the staves tight and the barrel watertight. After settling, then twice a year You
Restack and inspect the stones Lift the stones out, discard any that are cracked or crumbling, and restack them loosely so air moves between them. Tightly packed or broken stones make the elements work harder and shorten their life. Yearly You
Air it after use Leave the door open and the vent clear until the room is dry. A barrel is single skin and unheated between sessions, so trapped damp is what marks the benches, not the heat. Every session You
Wash the benches Plain water and a brush, no detergent and nothing film forming. Bare timber in a sauna is meant to stay bare. Monthly, or after heavy use You
Check planning if it sits near a boundary Outbuildings are usually permitted development, but the rules tighten within two metres of a boundary, where 2.5 metres is the height limit. At 1.956 metres this clears it, but listed buildings, conservation areas and flats are all treated differently. Once, before you order You, with your council

Reasons to buy something else.

Nothing can set a pallet down outside your property

Delivery is by lorry to the kerbside. A shared private road, steps to the kerb or a narrow lane can mean the pallet stops somewhere you then have to carry a kit from.

You cannot get a 50A circuit to the spot

This is one dedicated circuit, not a socket. If the consumer unit is full, or the run is long, the electrician's bill is the part of this purchase that varies most.

It is usually just the two of you

Six seats cost about £80 a year more to run than four at twice weekly use, and take up 560mm more garden. If the sauna is normally for two, the Pinnacle is the better buy and it is £1,200 cheaper.

You want it to stay the colour it arrives

Cedar left outdoors goes silver grey within a couple of seasons. Nothing stops it, and treating a sauna exterior is not something the maker asks for.

If any of these apply, say so and we will point you at what does suit you, including when that is a cheaper product or one we do not sell.

Warranty

The UK distributor administers claims and raises them with the maker where needed, and you deal only with us. The cabin is sold for home use: commercial or very frequent use can affect cover.
