Installation, if you would rather not build it yourself

Every sauna arrives as a kit you can build yourself. If you would rather not, tick the box and we introduce you to an independent installer near you. Expect it to cost from about £650.

What ticking the box does

  • Nothing is charged at the checkout. The tick adds a note to your order.
  • We find an independent installer who covers your postcode, someone we have used before where we can, and put you in touch.
  • You agree the price and the date with the installer and pay them directly. Their contract is with you, not with Tarnfell.
  • If the price does not suit, say no. Your order stands and you build the cabin yourself.

What the installer does

  • Builds the cabin where it is going to stand, working from the maker's instructions.

What stays with you

  • Anything this page lists under what arrives and what does not. For an outdoor cabin that is usually the base.
  • Electrical work. The installer does not do it. Where the product needs its own circuit, a qualified electrician runs, connects and certifies it, because outdoor circuits and rooms containing a sauna heater are notifiable work in England.

Why £650 is a guide, not a price

  • It is where installation typically starts. The installer's figure for your order depends on the size of the cabin, how far the parts have to be carried from the kerb, and how far they travel to you.

How this one arrives

The cabin arrives flat, as wall, roof and glass panels with the benches, heater and kit boxed separately, 186kg in total on the maker's figure.

If you would rather not build it yourself, we can introduce you to an independent installer near you, typically from £650, paid to them directly. Once you place your order we confirm your delivery date, and if you want an installer we introduce you to an independent one near you.

Warranty

Seven years on the wood structure and two years on the electrical components, which are the terms France Sauna publish for the Zen range in its specification sheet.

The UK distributor administers the warranty and raises claims with the maker where needed. The cabin is sold for home use: the distributor does not supply it for commercial use, and commercial or very frequent use can affect cover.

Claims come to us. One email, and we deal with the distributor and the maker on your behalf rather than handing you a phone number.

Returns

Until the order is placed with the supplier you can cancel and be refunded in full, with no reason needed.

After that the cabin is on its way from the distributor, and our returns policy sets out exactly where that leaves you. Check the packages against the parts list on the day they arrive and tell us about anything damaged or missing within 48 hours; anything that arrives damaged or faulty is ours to put right either way.

About this product

The Zen 3 is a 1,530mm by 1,100mm cabin, 1,900mm tall, built in Canadian spruce with an 8mm toughened glass door and a glass panel either side of it. One bench with a headrest on the wall, 1.5 metres long, seating three. Soft lighting sits in the top corner and under the bench.

It is a traditional electric sauna rather than an infrared one: a 3.5kW Harvia Vega heater with its stones is in the price, along with the wooden bucket and ladle, the thermometer and hygrometer and the sand timer. Water on the stones gives the burst of steam a Finnish sauna is known for.

The heater needs its own circuit, fitted by an electrician. Harvia rate the 3.5kW Vega at 16A on a 230V single phase supply in 2.5mm² cable. Everything else about it is fixed, so there is nothing to configure.

Is this the right one for you

Who this is actually for.

Every product here is described with the honest opposite beside it: who it suits, and who should be looking at something else. If none of the descriptions below fits you, the right answer is elsewhere in the range, or elsewhere entirely, and we would rather say so.

You want a real Finnish sauna indoors, with room for a third person

Stones, steam and a ladle, in 1.53 by 1.1 metres. The bench is 1.5 metres long, so three sit comfortably or two sit with space. The 3.5kW Harvia heater draws about 15 amps at 230 volts, so it needs a 16 amp circuit of its own, which is an afternoon for an electrician rather than a conversation with the network operator.

Worth confirmingyou want a second tier to sit higher, or room to lie down. One bench, one level. The Zen 3C and Zen 4 in the same range have two tiers, and we would rather point you at one of them.

You want the heater decided and in the price

Most cabins at this size are sold bare and the heater is added at the checkout. Here the Harvia Vega, its stones, the bucket, the ladle, the thermometer and the sand timer are all in the £2,014, so the figure on this page is the figure you pay for a working sauna, before delivery and the electrician.

Worth confirmingyou want WiFi, a schedule or an app. The Vega is controlled by two switches on the heater itself, a timer and a thermostat, and that is all. It is simple, which is a virtue, but it will not warm up while you drive home.

The product that gets used is the one worth recommending, and it is not always the largest one.

Will it work where you are

The measurements that decide it.

Read this before anything else. An indoor cabin is almost never sent back because it was the wrong product; it is sent back because it would not go up the stairs or stand up in the room.

Footprint1.53m wide by 1.10m deep

The ceiling is the one to respect. The finished cabin is 1.9 metres tall, but the wall panels are tipped upright during assembly and there has to be room above them to do it. Measure where the cabin will actually stand, not at the door.

What actually happens

From order to first use.

Here is each stage, and who does what. Delivery is estimated at 10 to 14 working days from order. If you would rather have stock, the date or anything else settled first, email hello@tarnfell.com before you order and we will confirm it in writing.

  1. Week 0

    Order and room check

Ceiling height, floor, access and your consumer unit are agreed before the order is placed with the distributor. There is nothing to configure on the cabin itself.

  2. Before it arrives

    The circuit

An electrician runs a 16A single phase circuit to the corner where the heater will hang and leaves it ready to terminate. A room containing a sauna heater is notifiable work, so this is not a job for a competent friend.

  3. Delivery day

    To the door, in panels

The cabin arrives flat as wall, roof and glass panels with the benches, heater and kit boxed. Check everything against the parts list the day it lands, which is the easy time to find out.

  4. Build day

Two people, working from the manual

Wall panels up, glass in, roof on, benches and heater guard fitted. If you would rather hand it over, we introduce you to an independent installer near you once you have ordered.

  5. Before first use

    The electrician returns

The heater is hung, connected and the circuit tested and certified. You should be handed a certificate. Then the stones go in, loosely, and the first heat cycle burns off the factory smell with the door open.

Living with it

What owning one actually involves.

The handful of things that decide whether this is still in use in year three.

The heaterTwo switches and a bucket

The Harvia Vega is controlled by a timer and a thermostat on the heater itself. Set both, wait for the stones to come up, and throw water when you want steam. There is no app and nothing to pair, which is either the point or the problem, depending on who you are.

The timberSpruce, and it can bleed resin

Spruce carries pitch pockets that cannot be seen when the boards are sorted. If one is near the surface, heat softens it and it weeps. Acetone on a rag takes it off, or let it harden and scrape it. Worth knowing before it happens rather than after.

If you stop using itHeat it once a month

An unheated timber room in a house that breathes is where mould starts, and one cycle a month prevents it. This is Harvia's standing advice for any cabin left idle.

CleaningWarm water and a damp cloth

Nothing else inside. Bare timber in a sauna is meant to stay bare, and detergents leave a film that bakes.

What it costs to live with

The running costs, with the working shown.

The purchase price is public; the running cost rarely is. Ours are published with the assumptions stated, so you can check the arithmetic and change it for your own tariff.

A sauna session, 3.5kW

about 97p

Heat up: 3.5kW for 40 minutes is 2.3 kWh, for a room of about 3.2 cubic metres. Holding: 1 hour at roughly 40% duty is 1.4 kWh. Total 3.7 kWh at 26.32p is about 97p.

Twice a week for a year

about £101

104 sessions at 97p. For comparison, the same arithmetic on an 8kW outdoor barrel comes to about £383, and that is before the weather gets involved.

The stones

a few pounds, every few years

Sauna stones crack and crumble with use and are restacked yearly and replaced when they do. Harvia's 3.5kW Vega takes 12kg. They are the only consumable part.

Assumptions: electricity at the Ofgem price cap unit rate of 26.32p per kWh, 1 October to 31 December 2026, with no VAT on household electricity in that period. Figures are calculated from the heater's rated output of 3.5kW, not measured on an installed cabin. Heat up is taken as 40 minutes, our working figure for a room of about 3.2 cubic metres indoors, and it says so here rather than being presented as theirs. An indoor cabin in a heated house loses far less than an outdoor one, so these sums are closer to the truth than the same sums on a garden sauna.

Owning it properly

What you have to do, and what the rules require.

Everything you have to do, and how often.

Job How often Who
Install and certify the circuit 3.5kW draws about 15A at 230V. Harvia publish the 3.5kW Vega as 230V single phase on a 16A fuse with 3 x 2.5mm2 cable, or 400V two phase at 2 x 10A with 4 x 1.5mm2. A room containing a sauna heater is notifiable electrical work in England and Wales. Once, before first use A qualified electrician

Reasons to buy something else.

You want a second tier, or room to lie down

One bench, 1.5 metres long, one level. The Zen 3C and Zen 4 in the same range have two tiers, and we would rather sell you one of those than watch someone perch on the floor.

You cannot run a 16 amp circuit to the room

The heater will not run from a socket. If a dedicated circuit is not possible where the cabin would stand, an infrared cabin on a lighter supply is the honest alternative, and the Apollon range is built for exactly that.

You want an app, a schedule or a remote start

Two switches on the heater, a timer and a thermostat, and nothing beyond them. It is simple by design. If you want the sauna warm when you walk in from the car, this is not the cabin that does it.

The room is damp already

A timber cabin wants a dry room with air moving through it. A sauna does not fix a cellar; it makes the problem worse and puts spruce in the middle of it.

If any of these apply, say so and we will point you at what does suit you, including when that is a cheaper product or one we do not sell.

Warranty administration

Seven years on the wood and two on the electronics are the maker's published terms. Claims run through the UK distributor, which raises them with the maker where needed, and you deal only with us. The cabin is sold for home use: the distributor does not supply it for commercial use, and commercial or very frequent use can affect cover.
