How to read a cold plunge specification

Which figures actually predict how a plunge will perform in a British garden, and which are there to fill a table. Eight questions worth having answered in writing before you spend the money.

How to read a cold plunge specification

Cold plunge specifications are unusually good at looking informative while telling you very little. Two units can list almost identical numbers and behave completely differently in a British garden. This guide is about which figures actually predict how something will perform, and which are there to fill a table.

Start with insulation, not the chiller

Most buyers compare chiller power first. It is the wrong place to start. A chiller has to remove the heat that gets in, so the amount of heat getting in is the number that governs everything: how hard the unit works, how much it costs to run, how loud it is, and how long it lasts.

An uninsulated or lightly insulated tub with a strong chiller will hold temperature. It will also run its compressor far more of the time than a well insulated tub with a modest chiller, which means more electricity, more noise, and more hours on a component with a finite life.

Insulation is the specification that decides your running cost. Chiller size only decides how fast you get there.

Ask what the insulation actually is, where it is, and whether it includes the lid. Many do not insulate the lid properly, and a bare lid on a plunge is like a bare loft on a house. Ask, too, whether the plumbing between the tub and the chiller is insulated, because on an outdoor installation that run can be a surprising amount of the total loss.

Chiller figures worth asking about

Figure What to ask
Cooling capacity Stated in watts or BTU per hour, at what ambient temperature. A capacity quoted at twenty degrees ambient tells you little about thirty.
Pull down rate Degrees per hour, from what starting temperature, in what volume. All three matter, and are often omitted.
Minimum achievable The lowest it will actually hold, not the lowest the display shows.
Rated ambient range Both ends. Plenty of units are specified down to five degrees and not below.
Noise at one metre In decibels. This matters enormously if the unit sits near a neighbour or under a bedroom window.
Ingress protection The IP rating of the outdoor unit. Rain here is frequently horizontal.

The temperature claim to be sceptical of

Anything phrased as a single number with no context. Down to three degrees is not a specification, it is an advertisement. Down to three degrees, in how many litres, starting from what, at what ambient, and can it hold that or merely touch it? A manufacturer confident in their product will answer all four without hesitating.

Filtration and water care

This is where the real difference between owning a plunge you use and owning a plunge you resent tends to sit. Cold water holds less biological activity than warm, which helps, but a plunge still needs proper filtration, and the weekly effort involved varies a lot between designs.

  • Filter type and cost. Cartridge, sand, or a combination. Ask the replacement interval and the price of a cartridge, then multiply by five years.
  • Ozone or UV. Both reduce, but do not eliminate, the chemical dosing required. Ask what the manufacturer's actual dosing recommendation is with the system running.
  • Circulation schedule. Whether the pump runs continuously or on a timer, and what that does to the running cost you calculated earlier.
  • Drain and refill. How long it takes, whether there is a proper drain fitting, and how often the manufacturer recommends it.

Ask the direct question: how many minutes a week does this realistically take. If the answer is vague, assume more than you hope.

The shell, and why the material matters

Acrylic, stainless steel, fibreglass composite and timber clad shells all age differently outdoors in Britain. Acrylic is durable and easy to clean, but the quality varies enormously with thickness and backing. Stainless is superb if it is a marine grade and merely acceptable if it is not: ask for the grade, because 316 and 304 behave very differently in a wet environment with chemicals present.

Whatever the material, ask about UV stability and about what the warranty says regarding cosmetic change. A shell that discolours in three years is not a fault to some manufacturers, and is very much a fault to the person looking at it.

Electrical and siting

Almost every chilled plunge needs an outdoor electrical supply installed by a qualified electrician. Get a rough cost for that before you commit, because a long cable run through an established garden is a real number and it belongs in your budget rather than in a surprise.

Ask what the unit draws at start up as well as in normal running, and confirm the supply requirement with the manufacturer in writing rather than assuming a standard socket will do.

Weight when full

The figure people miss. Water weighs a kilogram a litre, so a six hundred litre plunge is six hundred kilos of water plus the shell plus the occupant. That is well over three quarters of a tonne on whatever it is standing on. Decking in particular needs checking rather than hoping, and a decked installation is worth a conversation with someone who can assess the joists.

Warranty, and the questions that reveal its real value

Length is the least interesting part of a warranty. What matters is what is covered, what is excluded, and who handles a claim.

  • Is the chiller covered for the same period as the shell? Very often it is not.
  • Are seals, pumps and control boards included, or classed as consumables?
  • Is labour included, or parts only?
  • How long are spare parts guaranteed to remain available after the model is discontinued?
  • Who do you contact, and does that person handle the manufacturer for you?

That last one is the whole reason to buy from a retailer rather than direct from a factory abroad. On anything we list, a warranty claim is one email to us and we deal with the maker. We will also tell you plainly what a warranty does not cover, because most disputes in this category come from expectations rather than faults.

A short checklist to take with you

Whoever you buy from, ours or anyone else's, these are the questions worth having answered in writing before you spend the money.

  • What is the insulation, including the lid and the pipework?
  • What is the cooling capacity, at what ambient, in what volume?
  • What is the rated ambient range at both ends?
  • What is the noise level at one metre?
  • What is the IP rating of the outdoor unit?
  • What is the weekly water care routine, in minutes?
  • What is the filled weight?
  • What exactly does the warranty cover, and who handles a claim?
