How to Read a Cold Plunge Specification
Learn how to read a cold plunge specification properly. We explain which figures actually matter, including insulation, cooling capacity, pull-down rate, water care, electrical requirements, weight and warranty.
Cold plunge specifications are unusually good at looking informative while telling you very little.
Two units can list almost identical numbers and behave very differently in a British garden. A chiller might claim a very low minimum temperature, but that figure alone doesn't tell you how quickly it will get there, how much electricity it will use, or whether it can maintain that temperature when the weather changes.
The useful question isn't "Which plunge has the biggest numbers?"
It's "What do these numbers actually tell me about owning the thing?"
Here are the specifications worth paying attention to.
Start with heat loss, not the chiller
The chiller gets most of the attention because it's the component doing the cooling. But the chiller doesn't determine how much heat the water gains in the first place.
That's governed by heat loss from the system, which is influenced by the insulation, lid, exposed surfaces, pipework, ambient temperature and how the plunge is used.
A poorly insulated tub with a powerful chiller may still reach a low temperature. It simply has to work harder to keep it there.
That means more compressor runtime, greater electricity consumption and more operating hours on the cooling equipment.
Chiller capacity largely determines how quickly you can pull the water down. Heat loss determines how hard it has to work to keep it there.
What to ask about insulation
Don't settle for "fully insulated".
Ask:
- What insulation material is used?
- Where is it installed?
- How thick is it?
- Is the base insulated?
- Is the lid insulated?
- Is the pipework between the tub and chiller insulated?
- What conditions was the claimed performance measured in?
The lid deserves particular attention. A plunge can have well-insulated walls but still lose considerable heat through a poorly insulated cover.
Think of it like a house: excellent wall insulation doesn't compensate for leaving the roof exposed.
Chiller figures worth asking about
The chiller specification is useful, but only when you understand the conditions behind the numbers.

| Noise | What is the measured noise level, and at what distance? |
| IP rating | What protection does the outdoor chiller have against water and dust? |
Cooling capacity needs context
A cooling-capacity figure on its own isn't enough.
A manufacturer might state a cooling capacity in watts or BTU per hour, but the result depends on the conditions under which it was measured.
A figure measured at 20°C ambient doesn't necessarily tell you what happens when the chiller is sitting outside in a much warmer garden.
The same applies to pull-down time.
If someone tells you a plunge cools by a certain number of degrees per hour, ask:
From what starting temperature? In how many litres? At what ambient temperature?
Without those details, the figure is difficult to compare meaningfully.
Be sceptical of the minimum-temperature claim
"Down to 3°C" sounds impressive.
It isn't a complete specification.
Ask:
- In how many litres?
- Starting at what temperature?
- At what ambient temperature?
- How long did it take?
- Can it maintain that temperature?
- Was the plunge covered during the test?
There is a significant difference between briefly reaching a particular temperature under favourable conditions and maintaining it reliably outdoors.
A useful specification tells you the conditions behind the claim.
Don't look at the chiller in isolation
The cooling system is more than the compressor.
Look at the complete system:
Chiller → circulation pump → filtration → water treatment → plumbing → tub → insulation → lid
Each part affects ownership.
A chiller that is efficient but connected to a poorly insulated tub isn't necessarily an efficient system.
Likewise, a plunge with sophisticated water treatment may be easier to own than one that requires frequent manual cleaning, even if the headline specifications look similar.
Filtration and water care
This is where the difference between owning a plunge you use and owning a plunge you resent can become apparent.
Cold water does not remove the need for filtration and water treatment. You still need to understand what happens to the water between uses and what you are expected to do to keep it clean.
Filter type and cost
Find out whether the system uses:
- cartridge filtration
- sand filtration
- another filtration method
- or a combination
Then ask:
How often does the filter need replacing, and how much does the replacement cost?
A £30 filter that needs replacing frequently can cost more over several years than a more expensive filter with a much longer service interval.
UV and ozone
UV and ozone can form part of a water-treatment system and reduce the treatment burden, but they don't make water care unnecessary.
Ask what the manufacturer's recommended treatment regime actually is with the system operating normally.
Don't assume that "UV" or "ozone" means you never need to add anything to the water.
Circulation
Ask:
- Does the circulation pump run continuously?
- Is it controlled by a timer?
- How many hours per day does it operate?
- What does the pump consume?
- Does filtration happen automatically?
A pump running continuously isn't necessarily a problem, but you need to understand its contribution to the overall running cost.
Drain and refill
Find out:
- How often the manufacturer recommends draining the plunge
- How long draining takes
- Whether there is a proper drain connection
- Where the water is intended to go
- How easy it is to clean the tub afterwards
And ask the seller a very simple question:
"Realistically, how many minutes a week will I spend looking after this?"
A vague answer is useful information in itself.
The shell material matters
Acrylic, stainless steel, composite and timber-clad constructions all have different characteristics outdoors.
Don't stop at the name of the material.
Ask what is actually being used and how the manufacturer expects it to perform in an outdoor environment.
For stainless steel, for example, ask which grade is used. 316 generally offers greater corrosion resistance than 304, particularly where chlorides are involved, but the suitability of either depends on the environment and how the system is maintained.
For other shell materials, ask about:
- UV stability
- temperature resistance
- structural construction
- cleaning requirements
- expected cosmetic ageing
- warranty treatment of cosmetic changes
A shell that changes colour or appearance after several years might not be considered a manufacturing fault under the warranty.
You want to know that before buying it, not afterwards.
Electrical requirements and siting
A chilled cold plunge isn't simply a garden appliance that you necessarily plug into the nearest socket.
The electrical requirements should be established before you buy.
Ask the manufacturer:
- What supply does the system require?
- What is the normal running current?
- What is the maximum or start-up demand?
- Does it require dedicated protection?
- What type of outdoor installation is required?
And get the installation cost into your budget.
A short electrical run from an existing suitable supply is one thing. A long route through an established garden is another.
The same principle applies to the physical location.
Think about:
- access for delivery
- access for servicing
- drainage
- proximity to the electrical supply
- noise
- exposure to the weather
- clearance around the chiller
- whether the lid can be fully opened
The best place for the plunge isn't necessarily the place where it looks best in a photograph.
Don't forget the weight when full
Water weighs approximately 1kg per litre.
So a 600-litre plunge contains roughly 600kg of water before you've added:
- the shell
- the chiller and equipment
- the lid
- the occupant
You're quickly approaching or exceeding three-quarters of a tonne.
That's significant on any supporting surface.
Particular care is needed with decking. Don't assume that because a deck can support people walking across it, it can safely support a concentrated load of a large plunge filled with water.
If you're placing a substantial plunge on an elevated structure, get the supporting structure properly assessed.
Warranty: length isn't the whole story
A five-year warranty sounds better than a two-year warranty.
But the number of years is only one part of the equation.
Ask:
- Is the chiller covered for the same period as the shell?
- Are pumps covered?
- Are control boards covered?
- Are seals excluded?
- Which components are considered consumables?
- Is labour included?
- Are replacement parts available if the model is discontinued?
- Who actually handles the claim?
- Where is the repair carried out?
- What happens if the chiller fails during the warranty period?
The last question is particularly important.
A warranty is much more useful when you understand what happens when something goes wrong, rather than simply knowing that a warranty exists.
Ask whether you contact the manufacturer yourself or whether the retailer manages the process for you.
The specification that isn't written down
There is another specification worth considering:
How much work does this plunge create for its owner?
Two products can have similar dimensions, similar cooling capacity and similar headline features while being very different to live with.
One might require:
- regular filter changes
- manual dosing
- frequent cleaning
- regular water replacement
- more intervention when temperatures change
The other might automate much of that.
Neither is necessarily the right choice for everyone.
But the difference matters.
The best specification isn't necessarily the one with the biggest number. It's the one that tells you what ownership will actually be like.
A cold plunge buying checklist
Before spending the money, get the answers to these questions in writing.
- How is the tub insulated, including the lid and pipework?
- What is the chiller's cooling capacity, and at what ambient temperature was it measured?
- What is the pull-down rate, and what were the test conditions?
- What temperature can the system realistically maintain outdoors?
- What is the chiller's power consumption while cooling and maintaining temperature?
- What is the weekly water-care routine in practical terms?
- How much does the plunge weigh when filled and ready for use?
- What exactly does the warranty cover, and who handles a claim?
If a seller cannot answer those questions clearly, that tells you something.
It doesn't necessarily mean the product is poor.
It means you don't yet have enough information to compare it properly.
And that's the point.
A specification should reduce uncertainty.
If it doesn't, ask better questions.
